Head of the Fish Regatta, Saratoga Springs, NY

EARC ventured a blustery day in upstate NY to compete in the 19th annual Head of the Fish Regatta.  There were 144 teams and 1,015 boats competing in this well-managed event.  The course was a 4,000 meter head race with a chute start  EARC entered in five races.  Conditions were very windy, although it was warm with no rain.  (The times below are available on the www.togacrew.com Click on results 2004.)

The boys youth 4+ (Frank Petrucci (s), Kyle Vanderplatt, Brandon Thonus, and Matt Brierly coxed by Mike Arbuco) rowed an exceptional race with a time of 15:25:36 and placed 21 out of a field of 37 beating arch rivals the Newburgh Rowing Club by almost a full minute.

Frank and Kyle braved the water again in the Men's Open 2x with a time of 15:48.39 placing 14 out of 16.  However, this race consisted of college crews and older clubs with more seasoned rowers.  If they had entered the men's scholastic 2x race they would have cleanly placed third as the second place time in that race was 15:44.06 and the third place time was 16:32.86.  Congratulations on great rowing!

The men's masters 4+ race was up next for EARC (Jim Cody (s), Robert Wagner, Simon Haysom, Steve Hoverman coxed by Joan Meredith).  This was a small competetive field of rowing clubs and one high school team.  EARC's team showed a strong finish despite a cold, driving wind after the bridge to the end of the race placing 2 out of 5 with a time of 16:53.89.  They all received medals for their effort.  And kudos to Joan for her first race as a cox!  Excellent job by all!

Next was the Novice Women's 4+ (Linda Card (s), Karen Rhein, Kelly Gerhardt, Susie Graf coxed by Sue Baresel).  This was the biggest field of the day with 43 boats of all abilities.  The women rowed an awesome race with a time of 17:57.03 placing 32.  The disadvantage in this race was the officials shortened the race due to the winds by 600 meters.  The finish was now at the bridge (3,400 meters), but none of the teams on the water knew the course had changed.  Therefore, no one got to sprint to the finish.    However, the women rowed a fabulous race and congratulations on a terrific row!

The last race of the day was the Mixed 8+ (Jeff Friedrichs (s), Linda Dwyer, Katy Glover, Duane Card, Paul Baresel, Paul Mason, Sue Baresel, Jean Zimmer coxed by Richard Friedrichs).  This was also a large field with 37 boats including colleges, clubs, and high schools.  All teams knew the race was now shorter and were able to plan for it.  The team rowed a consistently paced race with a fast time of 14:02.70  to place 21 out of 37.  Congratulations to novice Duane Card who rowed in a masters boat and kept up.  And thanks to RIchard for a perfectly steered course.    Congratulations to all for an exceptionally fun time!

Thanks to Paul Baresel for all his efforts in keeping this club racing to the bitter end (and for convincing Katy and Linda to hang in there) and especially for driving the trailer and bringing the grill!  You are the motivator!!  Alex we missed you!
